Writing Task 2

In IELTS Writing section, exam takers are asked to write two tasks. Task 2 is always an essay for both the General and the Academic modules. In task 1 of the Academic module, candidates are required to summarize/analyze a graph, a chart or a table; whereas in the General module, they are required to write a letter.

The two tasks together must be completed in one hour. The candidates are always advised to spend more time on task 2 (20 minutes on task 1 and 40 minutes on task 2).

IELTS Writing Task 2 needs you to write at least 250 words. You will be presented with a topic and will be tested on your ability to respond by giving and justifying an opinion, discussing the topic, summarizing details, outlining problems, identifying possible solutions and supporting what you write with reasons, arguments and relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Task 2 carries more weightage than Task 1 in IELTS Writing. Most of the students face problems in generating ideas and developing content in this task. You will find a variety of helpful tutorials and resources on this website for improving the band score for IELTS Writing task 2

Before delving into any of the tasks or modules, there are a few “do’s and don’ts” that should be kept in mind:

DOs

Read the question and the instructions carefully.
Use a variety of sentence structures and vocabulary.
Spend more time on Task 2 (twice as much as task 1).
Check both your tasks when you finished writing for any grammatical error or vocabulary mistake (irrelevance/repetition)
Organize clearly.
Write clearly.
