IELTS Opinion Essay Tutorial 1

Follow this step by step tutorial in order to improve your essay writing skills

Many people believe that it’s better to learn something in a group rather than individually.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

  1. PLAN (in 4-5 minutes)

First decide your opinion. Think that do you agree or disagree with group work.

I personally agree. So, lets move in this direction.

After the decision, you have to make the plan like the following one and write the synonyms of the words in the question statement.

All this needs to be done in the question paper/ rough notepad itself.

I Agree,

But ask yourself these questions, once you decide your opinion

Why do I agree?

How do you think it enhances people skills?

Enhances people skills

By developing interest in an activity/learning

WRITE

Using the plan above, we will start writing the essay. The structure of opinion essay is as follows:-

Introduction= Paraphrase +Thesis statement

Body para 1= Topic statement + Explanation + Example + Summary statement (For the first reason)

Body para 2= same as above (For the second reason)

Conclusion= Concluding phrase + Paraphrase of the thesis statement +Future recommendations

INTRODUCTION

What am I doing to get 7 ?

Writing the essay

Paraphrase statement

I have mentioned the synonyms of few words in the question. I will use those to frame the paraphrase

Some people think that it is better to learn something in a team instead of learning on one’s own.

Thesis statement

Give my opinion + 2 Reasons for my opinion

I agree with the above statement since working in a group builds teamworking skills and allows the utilization of the group members’ expertise.

Introduction

After reading my introduction, the examiner is clear about my point of view and can expect what he is about to read in my upcoming paragraphs.

BODY PARAGRAPH 1

Topic sentence

I will mention the first reason of my argument, i.e, answer to the question ‘Why do I agree?’ And starting it with the linker ‘Firstly’ since it is my first argument.

Firstly, working in a group enhances teamwork skills in the participants that further exorbitates their people skills.

Explanation

I start with the linker ‘In other words’ (to tell the examiner that I am going to explain my argument) and I tell him ‘How does the team work help?’

In other words, strong team building skills help people to bond together and develop interest in the learning exercise.

Example

Proving my point with an example

For example, a person becomes bored after few hours of study, but if he learns in a group, or with a partner, he enjoys the learning process.

Summary

Telling the examiner ‘See! I have proved my point.’ And using the linker ‘Hence/Thus/Therefore’

Hence, it is evident that working in a group is more interesting for an individual rather than learning in isolation.

Body Paragraph 1

BODY PARAGRAPH 2

Topic sentence

I will mention the Second reason of my argument, i.e, answer to the question ‘Why do I agree?’ And starting it with the linker ‘Secondly’ since it is my first argument.

Secondly, group learning is very beneficial since it helps in utilization of each other’s expertise.

Explanation

I start with the linker ‘Simply put’ (to tell the examiner that I am going to explain my argument) and I tell him ‘How does the team work help?’

Simply put, every human being has unique skills and abilities, which can be useful for another participant of the group, thus making the learning process fruitful.

Example

Proving my point with an example and changing the linker here (Examiner doesn’t want to see repeated linkers!)

For instance, while learning abacus, if a student is not able to grasp it fast, another participant who can grasp the concept easily, would help the first one to do it. OR Another student would let him know the strategy to grasp the concept fast.

Summary

Telling the examiner ‘See! I have proved my point.’ And using the linker ‘Hence/Thus/Therefore’

Thus, it is correct to believe that group work allows exchange of skills during learning which is not possible in individual learning.

CONCLUSION

Concluding phrase + Paraphrase of thesis statement

Will tell the examiner that I am going to finish

To conclude, learning in a group is better than doing it individually because it enhances team spirit among the participants and allows the exchange of skills among them.

Body Paragraph 2

So, what difficult have I done? What words have I used which are sooo uncommon? What exactly have I done? Everything is simple!

Think over it, see above and then practice !!

CHECK

Well, why do I need to check my essay? Because before the examiner looks at my mistakes, its always better that I find and correct them.

How to check then? Simple, again.

This step will be your major band decider in the writing section.

a. Vocabulary– cross check and replace the repeated words with synonyms.  See if you can use few uncommon words for the simple ones. (But keep these only a FEW)

b. Grammar – Cross check your sentence structures (Make sure you have constructed various types), Tenses, prepositions, articles, commas. Why I am mentioning these? Because in almost all the essays I check contain mistakes in these grammatical topics. So, it is good idea to improve basic grammar and then start preparing for IELTS.

c. Arguments– Are they balanced? Have you answered the question fully?

d. Linkers– Are there enough?

These four points are actually the four criteria of checking IELTS Essay, but in our own language.
