Hi students. Today, I am going to touch an unusual topic which few of you think of when reading the criteria, but never demand for an explanation. So, what do the examiner actually means when he says “Cohesion and coherence,i.e., the linkers should attract no attention.”
Try to grasp this concept in simple words, “When someone uses a word twice, thrice, four times or more in a small piece of text, we will catch it easily.”
Now, same is the case with our IELTS Essay. If we use linkers in each sentence (some students do without noticing), examiner will catch them and label them as ‘fillers’ for your text. (You dont intend to, but he may think that you are trying to fill up the page with same kind of words over and over)
Consider it as a ‘Hit and Miss’ game. You have to write in such manner that examiner should always miss your linkers, and hit neither. Because when he will hit them repetitively, you will loose bands.
Following is an extract from one of my student’s essay, Lets see how many linkers you hit or miss?
There are many benefits of monitoring people by using new technology without their knowledge. Firstly, Security is tightenED now as compared to past. For example, In the past, there are/WERE no CCTV cameras but noW we can see widely a lot of security cameras. Owing to this COMMA the crime rate has been reduced and the public IS also following rules and regulations. Secondly, these cameras are also using/BEING USED in ONE’S own business //such as jewellery shops//NR in order to check whether the employees are working or not. Moreover, these cameras are helpful to control the theft. Thirdly, cell phone tracking is one of the main advantages because these trackers are helpful to track our family members //those// who travel long distance at night time. Therefore, in my opinion, people feel safe and secure because of the monitoring system.
Capital letters & // sign shows the mistakes I have pointed out in grammar.
(Don’t notice grammar here) , See if you miss the linkers here?
Can you? No, you cant, because they are in every sentence! Similarly, examiner will also hit them all.
Thus, when you are checking your essay, try to see if you hit or you miss the linkers in your text, and then you can adapt your text accordingly.
