Vocabulary building is a very important skill require to master IELTS Reading exam. I have mentioned its benefits in my post here. Now, I m explaining the techniques that you need to practice in order to build a wide range of vocabulary before your exam.
There are several effective ways to improve your vocabulary specifically for the IELTS reading exam. Here are some strategies you can use:
Read Widely
Engage in extensive reading across different genres and topics. Read books, newspapers, magazines, and online articles. This exposure to varied vocabulary contexts will help you encounter new words and reinforce your understanding of vocabulary in different contexts.
Create Vocabulary Lists
Keep a notebook or digital document to record new words you come across while reading. Include their definitions, example sentences, and any relevant collocations or synonyms. Review and revise these lists regularly to reinforce your learning.
Pick a new theme everyday, like education, environment etc. For example, you can use posts on my website to learn words related to various topics, like, Halloween, Health, Fitness
Use Context Clues
You should pay attention to the context in which new words are used. Look at surrounding words, phrases, and sentence structures which can provide clues to the meaning of unknown vocabulary. Train yourself to get the meanings from context, and practice using context clues in various passages to enhance your skills.
Study Word Families
You should focus on word families—groups of words that share the same root or base word—such as noun-verb-adjective-adverb combinations. For example, study words like “analyze” (verb), “analysis” (noun), “analytical” (adjective), and “analytically” (adverb). Understanding such word families will help you recognize patterns and expand your vocabulary more efficiently.
Learn Word Forms and Collocations
Study common word forms (e.g., noun, verb, adjective, adverb) and the collocations—words that frequently appear together—related to those words. Recognizing and using appropriate word forms and collocations will enhance your reading comprehension and help you choose the correct answers on the IELTS reading exam. Some examples of collocations: play a crucial role in, diagnosed with, makes a key difference, has a huge impact etc.
Practice with Sample Tests
Working through IELTS reading practice tests and focusing on the vocabulary used in the passages and questions helps a lot to develop lexical skills. Analyze the unfamiliar words, understand their meanings, and practice using them in context. This will help you become familiar with the vocabulary commonly found in the IELTS reading exam.
Engage in Vocabulary Exercises
Dedicate time to vocabulary exercises that focus on synonyms, antonyms, word associations, and completing sentences with appropriate vocabulary. These exercises will help you develop a deeper understanding of words and their relationships, improving your vocabulary range. You will find a lot of these exercises on my website.
Always remember that consistent and targeted practice is key to improving your vocabulary. By implementing these strategies, you can enhance your vocabulary skills and get your desired bands in the IELTS reading exam.
I hope these techniques prove useful for you and help you secure high bands in IELTS Reading exam.
