Concept of simple past tense
The simple past tense is used to describe an action or event that happened in the past and is now completed. The sentence structure for simple past tense is subject + past tense verb.
Here are examples of the sentence structure for different types of sentences in the simple past tense:
Affirmative sentence: I visited my grandparents last weekend.
Negative sentence: She didn’t go to the party last night.
Interrogative sentence: Did you finish your homework yesterday?
Interrogative-negative sentence: Didn’t they leave for the airport on time?
Wh-question: What did you do on your vacation last year?
Tag question: She went to the concert, didn’t she?
It’s important to note that irregular verbs have a different form in the past tense. For example:
Base form: go / Past tense: went
Base form: eat / Past tense: ate
Base form: swim / Past tense: swam
In sentences with irregular verbs, the past tense form is used instead of adding “-ed” to the base form.
Overall, the simple past tense is used to describe completed actions or events in the past. By using the correct sentence structure and verb form, learners can communicate effectively in the simple past tense.
