As an expert, I believe that learning vocabulary and grammar together is essential for language learners. Vocabulary provides the building blocks for language, while grammar provides the rules for how to use those building blocks in a meaningful way. By learning vocabulary and grammar together, learners can understand how words and phrases are used in context, express their thoughts and ideas more clearly and accurately, and produce clear and concise written communication. A strong vocabulary and a good understanding of grammar are also essential for reading and writing, and they can help learners comprehend and retain new information more effectively. By focusing on both vocabulary and grammar, learners can build a strong foundation for language learning, improve their language fluency, and achieve their language goals more effectively.

So, today we will learn some vocabulary related to halloween and do some exercises to practice Past continuous tense.

Ghostly – of or like a ghost; eerie and supernatural in appearance or sound

Haunted – having ghosts or spirits present; visited by ghosts or spirits

Apparition – a ghostly figure; a supernatural appearance or manifestation

Phantom – an apparition or ghostly figure; something that exists only in the imagination or appears to be a figment of one’s imagination

Specter – a ghostly image or apparition; a haunting or unsettling presence

Poltergeist – a mischievous or malevolent ghost or spirit that is believed to manifest itself by moving or making noises or other physical disturbances

Eerie – strange and frightening; having an inexplicable or unsettling atmosphere

Creepy – causing an unpleasant feeling of fear or unease; disturbingly strange or unfamiliar

Supernatural – attributed to some force beyond scientific understanding or the laws of nature; having a ghostly or supernatural quality

Cursed – subject to a curse or spell; marked by misfortune or bad luck

Possessed – under the control or influence of a supernatural force or entity; haunted or disturbed by a supernatural presence

Mysterious – difficult or impossible to understand, explain, or identify; having an aura of secrecy or hidden knowledge.

Now you have ample words to retell a scary story and give goosebumps!

The past continuous tense is used to describe actions that were in progress at a specific time in the past. The sentence structure for the past continuous tense is subject + was/were + verb-ing.

Here are examples of the sentence structure for different types of sentences in the past continuous tense:

1. Affirmative sentence: I was studying for my exam last night.

2. Negative sentence: She wasn’t watching TV when I called her.

3. Interrogative sentence: Were you playing basketball with your friends yesterday?

4. Interrogative-negative sentence: Wasn’t he cooking dinner when you arrived at his house?

5. Wh-question: What were you doing when the phone rang?

6. Tag question: They were working on the project, weren’t they?

It’s important to note that the past continuous tense is often used in combination with the simple past tense to describe two past actions happening at the same time. For example:

• She was cooking dinner while he was watching TV.

• They were playing soccer when it started raining.

In these sentences, the past continuous tense is used to describe the action that was in progress (cooking dinner, playing soccer), while the simple past tense is used to describe the action that interrupted it (watching TV, raining).

It was a dark and stormy night, and the wind ___________________ (howl) through the trees. I ___________________ (drive) down a deserted road, and the rain ___________________ (beat) against the windshield.

Suddenly, I ___________________ (see) a figure standing in the middle of the road. I ___________________ (slam) on the brakes, but it was too late. The figure ___________________ (hit) the windshield with a loud thud.

I ___________________ (get) out of the car to see who it was, but there was no one there. I ___________________ (look) around, and then I ___________________ (hear) a strange noise coming from the nearby woods.

I ___________________ (decide) to investigate, and as I ___________________ (walk) deeper into the woods, the noise ___________________ (get) louder and louder.

Suddenly, I ___________________ (see) a shadowy figure emerge from the trees. It ___________________ (move) towards me, and I ___________________ (realize) that it was a ghost.

I ___________________ (try) to run, but the ghost ___________________ (follow) me. I ___________________ (hear) its footsteps behind me, and I ___________________ (feel) a cold breeze on my neck.

Just as I thought it was over for me, I ___________________ (wake) up. It was all just a nightmare.
