IELTS Writing Task-1

The IELTS GT Writing Task 1 is a part of the General Training module of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). In this task, you are required to write a letter in response to a given situation or problem. It is designed to assess your ability to communicate effectively in writing, and it focuses on general, everyday real life topics rather than academic subjects.

There are three types of letters that can appear in IELTS GT Writing Task 1:

Formal Letter

In a formal letter, you have to use a polite and professional tone. This type of letter is usually written to someone you don’t know personally, such as a company or an official. It may involve making an inquiry, making a complaint, or requesting information. The letter should follow a specific structure with a formal salutation and closing.

You don’t know the person’s name you are writing to (e.g. bank, foreign university)
Greetings: Dear Sir or Madam
Letter endings: Yours faithfully
Your name: Mr John English (always with a family name, but the title is optional)
The tone of the letter is formal. Be polite. You can’t use contractions (use •l am writing’ not •I’m writing’).

Semi-Formal Letter

A semi-formal letter is less formal than a formal letter. It is often written to someone you have a professional or personal relationship with, such as a colleague or a friend. This type of letter can involve giving advice, expressing gratitude, or making a request. The tone can be slightly more relaxed while still maintaining a level of professionalism.

You know the person, but he/she is not a close friend to you (e.g. teacher, landlord, manager, colleague)
Greetings: Dear Mr Williams, Dear Mrs Williams
Letter endings: Yours sincerely / Sincerely yours (not Yours truly)
Your name: John English (always with a family name, but the title is optional)
The tone of the letter is polite. Mostly formal language; however, use a couple of phrases that are on the informal side.

Informal Letter

An informal letter is the most casual type of letter in IELTS GT Writing Task 1. It is written to someone you know well, such as a friend or a family member. This type of letter allows for a more conversational and friendly tone. These letters may include personal experiences, sharing news, inviting someone, or giving personal opinions.

You know him or her personally (e.g. friends, family)
Greetings: Dear Mom, Dear John, My dear friend
Endings: With best wishes, /See you soon, / Take care, /All the best,
Your name: John (no title and no family name)
The tone of the letter is informal. You can use contractions (I’m writing), but not abbreviations (see ya) and acronyms (OMG).
Do not use academic language.

These are some important points to remember while practicing for IELTS Writing task 1.
