IELTS Listening
The Listening test consists of four sections of a total of forty questions. You will listen to recorded texts, monologues and conversations of speakers with different accents. You will hear each section once. The level of difficulty is built up gradually; consequently, the first section is the easiest section and the fourth section, the most difficult one.
Test Structure:
The test consists of four sections, each with ten questions, making a total of 40 questions.
The recordings cover a range of topics, including everyday conversations, academic lectures, discussions, and monologues.
The difficulty level gradually increases from Section 1 to Section 4.
Listening test assessment
The main purpose of the Listening section is to assess exam takers in the following areas:
understand main ideas and specific factual information
recognise the opinions, attitudes and purpose of a speaker
follow the development of an argument
Types of Questions
The types of questions are similar to the ones which appear in the Reading test and the approaches to the questions are more or less the same.
The questions fall into one of these categories:
Multiple Choice
Short answer questions
Sentence completion (table/form/flow chart/summary/Notes)
Matching information
Plan/map/diagram labeling
