How to write an introduction for IELTS Academic writing task 1 (map question)

Hi friends! In this article, I am showing you how to write a band 8 introduction for IELTS Academic writing task 1. We will be covering map type question, but all other question types will also follow the same structure.

So lets get started.

Question: The two maps below show road access to a city hospital in 2007 and 2010. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

This image shows the changes that took place over a timespan of three years. As soon as you get the question paper, follow the steps:

Step 1: Write synonyms of the keywords in the question statement and paraphrase it.

Here, the synonyms will be:

maps: picture, diagram

show: illustrate, depict

access: network, entry, reach, approach

2007 and 2010: changes that took place over a timespan of three years.

After writing these, we have to paraphrase (change the words/sentence structure but keeping the meaning same) the question statement. there are many ways to do it:

  1. The picture illustrates the road network of city hospital in 2007 and 2010.

  2. The road network of city hospital is depicted in the given diagram in the years 2007 and 2010.

  3. The picture shows the changes that took place in regards to the road access to the city hospital over a period of 3 years.

Step 2: Write the main features/comparisons on the question paper and write the overview.

Mention the main points as shown in picture on the question paper. For instance, for this question, following will be the main features/ comparisona:

  1. Development of roundabouts

  2. Bus station on the west

  3. Separate parking spaces for public and staff cars

So, the overview will look like this: (options)

1.Overall, it is noticeable that the road access to the city hospital had been upgraded in 2010 with the addition of a bus station, two roundabouts and a separate public car park.

2.Overall, distinct parking spaces have been constructed for public and staff cars, 2 roundabouts and a bus station have been added to ease the road access to the city hospital.
