I hear these questions all the time! But believe me, IELTS Reading is not that hard nut to crack if you create your foundational skills solid.

Now, what are those foundational skills which are required to pass the IELTS Reading exam with flying colors? Here we go!

Vocabulary building is a crucial skill in the IELTS reading exam for several reasons:

1. Understanding Passage Content: A wide vocabulary range allows you to comprehend the passage more effectively. It enables you to grasp the meaning of words, phrases, and expressions used in the text, which is essential for overall comprehension.

2. Answering Questions: Many IELTS reading questions require a deep understanding of vocabulary. Questions may ask you to identify synonyms, antonyms, or words with specific meanings. Having a strong vocabulary helps you recognize and accurately answer these types of questions.

3. Paraphrasing: In the IELTS reading exam, the passage may contain paraphrased versions of the question or the answer choices. A rich vocabulary allows you to identify these paraphrases and make connections between the passage and the questions. By understanding the vocabulary variations, you can select the correct answer more easily.

4. Academic Vocabulary: The IELTS reading test often includes academic texts that require familiarity with specialized vocabulary. Academic vocabulary consists of words commonly used in academic writing, research papers, and scholarly discussions. Developing your academic vocabulary will help you comprehend and engage with these types of texts effectively.

Reading comprehension skills refer to the ability to understand and interpret written texts easily. It involves actively engaging with the text, extracting meaning from it, and making sense of the information presented. Reading comprehension skills go beyond merely reading the words on the page; they involve comprehending the author’s message, identifying main ideas, understanding details, and making inferences.

Here are some key components of reading comprehension skills:

1. Vocabulary: A strong vocabulary is essential for understanding the meaning of words in context. It allows readers to grasp the nuances and subtleties of the text and comprehend the author’s intended message.

2. Main Idea Identification: Readers need to identify the main idea or central theme of a passage. This involves understanding the primary focus or purpose of the text and recognizing the key points or arguments presented by the author.

3. Supporting Details: Reading comprehension requires the ability to identify relevant supporting details within the text. These details provide evidence, examples, or explanations that support the main idea and contribute to a deeper understanding of the text.

4. Text Structure: Understanding the organizational structure of a passage helps readers navigate the information effectively. It involves recognizing the relationships between paragraphs, the use of headings and subheadings, and understanding how ideas are presented (e.g., cause and effect, problem-solution, chronological order).

5. Inference Making: Skilled readers can draw logical inferences based on the information provided in the text. They go beyond the explicitly stated information and use their background knowledge, context clues, and reasoning skills to make connections and reach conclusions.

6. Evaluating Tone and Purpose: Readers analyze the tone (the author’s attitude or feeling) and purpose (the reason behind writing the text) of the passage. This understanding helps interpret the author’s perspective, intentions, or biases, which can influence the overall meaning of the text.

7. Summarizing: Summarizing involves condensing the main ideas and important details of a passage into a concise form. It demonstrates comprehension and the ability to identify and prioritize key information.

The IELTS reading test has a specific time limit, typically 60 minutes. During this time, you are required to read and comprehend multiple passages and answer a variety of questions. Effective time management ensures that you can complete all sections within the allocated time. Also, the test usually includes three or sometimes four passages, each followed by a set of questions. Each passage can range from 700 to 900 words. Managing your time allows you to allocate a sufficient amount of time to read each passage, answer the associated questions, and move on to the next section without rushing.

So, in order to complete the test in the given time limit, you have to practice with several mock tests before the exam.
