Environment is a fairly common topic that appears in various English language exams. Today, we are going to learn about few common words related to environment and use of ‘should’ in order to give suggestions.

Use & Functions of ‘Should’

“Should” is a modal auxiliary verb in English that is often used to express different types of meanings, such as obligation, expectation, advice, suggestion, and probability. Here are some examples of how “should” can be used:

Obligation: When we want to indicate that something is necessary or required, we can use “should” to express obligation. For example:

You should study harder if you want to pass the exam.

We should wear a mask in public to protect ourselves and others.

Expectation: When we want to express a likely or anticipated outcome, we can use “should” to indicate expectation. For example:

There are quite many words related to this topic. But I have made a list of the most commonly used ones in the exams.

Nouns:

  1. Pollution – the presence or introduction into the environment of harmful or poisonous substances that can cause damage to living organisms and the natural world.

  2. Conservation – the protection, preservation, management, or restoration of natural habitats, ecosystems, and wildlife.

  3. Climate – the average weather patterns and conditions over a long period of time in a particular region or location.

  4. Sustainability – the capacity to maintain or preserve resources and the natural world for future generations by minimizing environmental impact and promoting responsible consumption and production.

  5. Ecosystem – a community of living organisms (plants, animals, and microorganisms) interacting with one another and with their physical environment.

Verbs:

  1. Recycle – to convert waste materials into new products to prevent waste of potentially useful materials, reduce energy usage, and decrease pollution.

  2. Conserve – to protect and preserve natural resources, habitats, and wildlife from damage or destruction caused by human activities.

  3. Reduce – to decrease or minimize the amount of waste, energy, or resources used or produced in order to lower environmental impact and promote sustainability.

  4. Plant – to grow and establish vegetation, such as trees or crops, in an area to improve soil health, provide habitat for wildlife, and reduce erosion.

  5. Restore – to bring back or revive a damaged or degraded ecosystem or habitat to its natural state or function, by removing invasive species, replanting native vegetation, and improving soil health.

    Environmentally-friendly practices:

    • Recycling: The process of converting waste materials into new products to prevent waste of potentially useful materials, reduce energy usage, and decrease pollution.

    • Composting: The process of breaking down organic matter, such as food scraps and yard waste, into a nutrient-rich soil amendment.

    • Using public transportation or carpooling: The act of sharing a ride with others or using public transportation to reduce the number of vehicles on the road and decrease greenhouse gas emissions.

    • Conserving water and energy: The practice of reducing water and energy usage in order to lower environmental impact and promote sustainability.

    • Using eco-friendly products: The use of products that are made from environmentally friendly materials, are biodegradable, or are produced using sustainable practices.

    • Planting trees or participating in reforestation efforts: The act of planting trees or participating in efforts to restore and increase forested areas in order to improve air quality, provide habitat for wildlife, and reduce erosion.
